The Daily Grind
A bookshop café for those who linger
Our Story
The Daily Grind was born on a rainy Tuesday in 2019, when Adaeze Okafor — a former librarian with a serious espresso habit — decided the world needed one more place where time moved slowly. She found a stubborn old building on Awolowo Road that nobody wanted, painted the walls the color of old paper, and filled every shelf she could find with secondhand books.
We are not a chain. We are not trying to scale. We are a room full of mismatched chairs, hand-lettered menus, and the firm belief that the best afternoons are spent doing absolutely nothing useful. Every book on our shelves is available to read in-house for free. Some of them have notes in the margins. We like it that way.
Our coffee is roasted locally by a man named Emeka who takes it very personally if you add too much sugar. Our food is made fresh every morning by Ada's mother, who refuses to share her recipes with anyone, including us. Come hungry.
"Not all those who wander are lost — but most of them end up here eventually."
— Found written inside a copy of Americanah, left on Table 4
Open Mic & Overdue Bills
Bring a poem, a story, a confession, or just your ears. Our monthly open mic night is free entry, no sign-up required, and deeply chaotic in the best possible way. Ada's mother will be making suya. That alone is reason enough.
Coffee & Manuscript Morning
A quiet morning session for writers who need witnesses. Bring whatever you are working on and write alongside other people doing the same. No workshopping, no feedback unless asked.
Secondhand Book Fair
Hundreds of secondhand books, all genres, all prices. Bring cash, bring bags, bring friends you want to lose for three hours inside a building full of books.
